What acid to acid etch ebony?
Recently read a book on antique canes that mentioned acid etching of the ornate design in the shaft. The shaft was ebony so thought it might be possible as ebony is very hard. But what acid might be used? I'm sure it must have been a commercial process.
Ebonising was a method of applying a varnish like coating to wood to make it look like ebony. It was very popular in 19th cent,France where one allied trade was that of the ebonist. Some French students are still trained in those skills in association with furniture design and restoration courses. The Guild of Master Craftsmen may have links and books on these old techniques.
