If a 208 N force is applied along the handle of the 20-kg mower, what is the normal force exerted?
A gardener mows a lawn with an old-fashioned push mower. The handle of the mower makes an angle of 30degrees with the surface of the lawn.
The normal force is the perpendicular force the surface must exert to support the object in question. Since the lawn mower is being pushed from behind with a force of 208 N, just break the force into its component forms and add.
Fn = Fsin(theta) + W in the y - direction.
Fn = 208 * sin (30) + 196 = 300 N
You can also draw a free body diagram and use the upper corner, where the individual is pushing the lawnmower, and use the following:
Fn = 208 * cos(60) + 196 = 300 N
