How can I prevent my car from rusting?

I just got my first car, a 2005 chevy cobalt. Its in beautiful shape with no rust at all. But I live in Rochester, New York, and the winters are bad with lots of salt on the roads. How can I prevent my car from getting rust on it?

If you plan on keeping the car for a long time get it undercoated and get a good coat of wax on it just before winter and take it to the self spray wash once a week in the winter when there is salt on the roads and wash the salt off and be sure to get up under the fender wells good too with the spray to get the salt out.
