Why do we see air bubbles as soon as the candle dies out in "oxygen occupies 1/5th of tot vol of air " exp
In this exp a lighted candle is placed in a shallow bowl containing water...when a glass tumbler is inverted over the candle , it begins to dim and water rises simultaneously... when the candle gets extinguished air bubbles are seen...and also when the tumbler is lifted the bowl sticks to it... is this due to outside air pressure?
Yes, it's due to the outside pressure and a partial vacuum in the glass.
As the candle burns in the exclosed space, it is using up the oxygen and combustion eventually stops as the candle is starved. As the candle dies, the inside of the glass cools, and the depleted air (now containing CO2) cools down decreasing the pressure above the water. The CO2 is also absorbed by the water giving a further pressure decrease.
The pressure decrease causes dissolved air in the water to leave the water, hence the bubbles.
The Pressure Difference between the external pressure and that inside the glass causes the water level in the glass to increase.
Well, at least 1 other person has the necessary knowledge. Thanks for the 'Thumbs Up', whoever you are.
