Algebra homework explanation-- Can someone help me understand this problem?
"Martha has a balancing scale and finds that a glass and a bowl balance a mug. The bowl alone balances a glass and a plate, and three plates balance two mugs. How many glasses balance a bowl?"
I got the answer online. It's 5 but I don't understand how they got to it? Can someone help me understand?
Let g=glass, b=bowl, m=mug, p=plate
g+b = m
b = g+p
3p=2m
Use the first and third equations
g+b = m
2g + 2b = 2m
now use the other equation of 3p = 2m
2g + 2b = 3p
3b = 3g + 3p
3p = 3b - 3g
2g + 2b = 3b - 3g
5g = b
So 5 glasses balance a bowl
