Why did my glass baking dish shatter?

My husband cooked a kind of potato casserole. When he took it out of the oven, he set it on the stove, and it shattered. He didn't slam it down or anything, he just set it on the stove top to cool. Why did it shatter?
Sara, it was a BAKING dish. It wouldn't be used for anything other than the oven.

glass baking dishes break when you take the hot dish out of the oven and set it on a cold surface like metal, tile, stone, etc. I've had one break on me and my grand mother broke 2 on the same day on her new tile counter and couldnt figure out why. I was about 12 at the time and didnt realize what happened but my uncle explained to her why they broke and i remember that to this day. that was over 30 years ago and havent broken any glass baking dishes since.
